Travel with the third African Heritage Delegation from October 25 - November 7, 2014!
The African Heritage Delegation is an intensive educational experience and opportunity to learn about the current situation in Palestine/Israel.
Hear directly from Palestinians and Israelis, bear witness to the realities of the occupation and discriminatory policies, and support those working for justice by bringing their stories and struggles back to your community.
African Americans and others of African descent are encouraged to apply today. Others may support the project with a donation to the scholarship fund and sharing the project!
The African Heritage Delegation program raises awareness, heightens activism, and further links struggles between African Heritage communities in the US and those working for justice in Palestine/Israel.
The program provides an intentional space for participants to examine questions of race and ethnicity within the context of Palestine/Israel.
Delegation participants come from a variety of backgrounds and movements - Civil Rights, Black Power, South African anti-apartheid and anti-racist organizing - a diversity that enables rich and multi-dimensional group learning.
By creating an opportunity to explore present or past connections between struggles that communities of color face in Palestine/Israel and the US, we hope to strengthen the work for global justice.
Delegation Leaders and Local Guides:
IFPB delegations offer a combination of experienced leaders from the US with local multilingual guides who bring a range of knowledge and perspectives. The 2014 African Heritage Delegation leaders are:
- Zaynah Hindi is a Palestinian-American who grew up in Tennessee and the Bay Area. Zaynah has been a member of the transnational Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) since 2009 as a leader and organizer in both the Bay Area and Lebanon chapters, and currently serves as the National Membership Coordinator for the US Branch. She has participated in organizing numerous campaigns and initiatives regarding the Palestinian struggle, refugee rights, and social, political, and economic justice and works as the Programs Assistant and Youth Coordinator at the Arab Cultural and Community Center in San Francisco.
-
The Reverend Lucas Johnson was born in Germany and grew up in Coastal Georgia with family roots in Florida. He serves on the board of the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America and is currently transitioning in his role at the International Fellowship of Reconciliation from Southeast & Mid-Atlantic Regional Coordinator to International Coordinator. Lucas identifies strongly with the tradition of freedom fighters who engaged in what is often known as the American Civil Rights Movement. In that spirit, he has worked with such organizations as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, The Veterans of Hope Project, the National Council of Elders, and the Dorothy Cotton Institute.
